EtherCAT is on the verge of becoming the Ethernet solution in industry automation. The bus system is marked by high performance combined with easy and comfortable operation. An optimised use of the Ethernet frequency range enables efficient transfer of even inferior data volumes. In addition, EtherCAT is an open technology supported by the EtherCAT Technology Group and IEC certified in 2005. Meanwhile corresponding components are available, for example efficient multiturn encoders that at the same time convince by a sturdy and compact design. BaumerIVO has completed their multivo® product family by a new encoder capable of direct EtherCAT connection. The absolute encoder features a singleturn resolution of 13 bit respectively 29 bits multiturn. Maximum 65.536 turns are feasible by the resolution of 8192 steps per turn. The maximum code switching speed is 800 kHz with an accuracy of +/-0.05 degrees and even +/- 0.025 degrees with 400 kHz. Bus cover and encoder itself are modular components and thus can be integrated into the multivo® concept of modular fieldbus interfaces. E-connection is provided by three standardized M12 connectors that guarantee easy installation and reliable data transfer even under extreme conditions. In case of service both encoder and bus cover with integrated gateway can be exchanged independently from each other. The encoder is intended for shaft mounting and available either with clamping or servo flange.
Thanks to high-integration electronics the number of components is down to a minimum what means utmost reliability. The encoder operates by the patented “Touchless Encoder Principle”, i.e. without mechanical gears and the consequences wear-and-tear. In addition, the encoder of 58 mm in diameter and only 82 mm in length is very compact and can be installed even in places where only little space is available. The encoder is capable of rotation speeds of max. 10.000 rpm and operating temperatures between -20 and +85°C. As all the other BaumerIVO multiturn encoders, the EtherCAT design can stand shocks of max. 200 g and optionally offers protection standards IP54 or IP65 with additional shaft seal. Therefore even applications in rough industrial environments are no problem at all.
